To Port Huon And Cockle Creek
On Wednesday the 7th Feb we left Darren &
Maria’s to meet up with Kay and Derek who had stayed the previous night at
Wattle Grove, south of Hobart. We rendezvoused at Franklin, south of Huonville.
The plan was to find a camp spot and head down to Cockle Creek as a day trip
together in the Landcruiser.
The company that Kay & Derek hired the campervan from
only allowed them to do 12 km on unsealed road, which is common, and there was
19km of unsealed road from Ida Bay to Cockle Creek so a day trip with us was
the way to go.
Franklin Foreshore was a good cheap camp but we decided that
the Port Huon Regatta Park was better so we set up camp there. It was right on
the river and a good spot, albeit hard to find level ground.
Then we headed off for Cockle Creek. It is a beautiful spot
where there are lovely bays. In good weather it would be a great spot to camp.
Fortunately we had a good day. There was a four hour walk to South Cape (not
the most southern point) and we were not keen for that one. But there was a two
hour walk to Fishers Point round the headland to the oceanside. But first we
drove to the head of the track where we stopped for lunch on the beach.
It was a beautiful walk with great views out to the bays to
the north and views up the coast.
The history of the area was interesting, as it always is.
What is wrong with this picture? Are these two dressed to
cover different weather we may experience, one compensating for the other? It
doesn’t work that way guys. Different as chalk and cheese you might say.
We rounded the point to face the ocean. This lighthouse was
there, they don’t make them like they use to.
Bruny Island that way!
New Zealand that way!
Antartctica that way!
By the time we got back to the vehicle we had to have the
mandatory swim, although it would have been nicer with the sun shining.
That was a big day and we enjoyed relaxing when it was done.
