Allum Cliffs, Sheffield, Leven Canyon and Gunns Plains

On Thursday the 22nd March we left Cosy Corner and went to Chudleigh via Lake Leake and Cambell Town. We stayed in the showground camp for $5 a night. At Chudleigh itself is a great bee and honey shop called The Honey Farm. Linda was in heaven. I don’t know how you spend over $70 in honey. Presents apparently.

Friday morning we headed out toward Mole Creek and visited Alum Cliffs. The weather was rainy and overcast and we were high in the mountains so we didn’t know if we were going to be able to see anything. After praying for clearer weather we were blessed with great views.

Amazingly we were the only people there the whole time. On the walk back we got photos of this beautiful bird. Ruby red breast I called him. Have seen it’s name somewhere but cannot remember it now. Linda has a good quality Nikon and I have an old Canon. Bet you can guess which photos are Linda’s and which was my single photo.

We then moved on to Mole Creek for a quick look and a take-a-way coffee. Then we headed off to Sheffield via Paradise (the back road). Sheffield is adorned with murals which was an idea someone had to attract tourism. It certainly worked and the town looks like it is thriving.

We had lunch at a Chinese Restaurant there that does paddock to plate cuisine. The family began their farm there about 20 years ago and then started the restaurant. A lot of hard work but they did well. They have write ups in the foody magazines and newspapers. Lunch was great.

Then on to Deloraine for a quick look and back to camp. We saw the small cramped free camp at Deloraine and were glad we had stayed at Chudleigh.

On returning Linda went to the honey shop again.

Our original plan was that we would do the Great Lakes south of Chudleigh while we were there but the weather was lousy again on Saturday so we hitched up and went on to Gunns Plains to stay at the Wings Wildlife Park. I had read about this place and knew that it was a good spot to do Leven Canyon from. It was only $20 a night for power and water. We had a beautiful view with that.

After setting up and having lunch there was a break in the weather so we hoped that we would get a good look at Leven Canyon. So we went to the canyon and once again, after a prayer for good clearing mist, we had partial blue skies over the canyon. It was spectacular. Moreso than Alum Cliffs.

As I was doing a video on the Canon this wedge tailed eagle showed up and hovered over us for a while. The still don’t do it justice unfortunately but look for it on my facebook page. It was very cool.

We then walked down to the lookout from the near bottom of the Canyon, called ‘The Edge’.

Back to camp and the sun was still shining on the valley looking from our campsite so it was nice sitting out having a drink and checking out our view.

There was solid rain most of the night and next morning. The park has a late checkout policy for campers, 3pm. That worked in our favour as there was another break in the weather so we headed up to the lookout. I have to say that this valley, Gunns Plains, is my favourite part of Tazzie. It is so beautiful.

After the lookout and hitching up we had a walk around their animal farm. They have a larger dedicated zoo but these are animals they have on display free of charge. Very cool.
