Bicheno and Another Visit to Wineglass Bay

On Wednesday the 14th of March we had left Mount Field National Park (Left of Field) and stayed at Bethune Park and travelled to Bothwell the next day which was all contained in the previous blog post. So it was still Thursday when we left Bothwell and joined the Midlands Highway.

We travelled north and stopped in Tunbridge. Much earlier on our Tazzie travels on the way to Hobart, when we had travelled south and drove through Tunbridge we saw a banner on a fellows fence advertising Vision Christian Radio. We love that radio station and listen to it online all the time. We were disappointed we had not stopped as the fellow was gardening in his front yard as we drove by and he gave us a wave. So we came off the highway again into Tunbridge and the fellow with his Vision Christian Radio banner was out gardening in the front yard again. We stopped, said hello and had a great conversation with him and thanked him for his support of Vision radio.

After moving on we stopped in Campbell Town and had lunch and shopped. Onto our campsite for the next three nights at Pondering Frog near the turn off to Freycinet National Park. It is a free camp, donation only, at a café/ice creamery business which we have stopped at before and had a meal there. It was quite full there so we had to camp very close to the road and was therefore the first line of defence if someone fell asleep at the wheel. But we had a good nights sleep and next morning someone left the best site in the place so we took that. It was not an ordeal as we had stayed hooked up when we arrived.

Then drove into Bicheno and had a look at the blowhole.

While we were checking out the blowhole this seal dropped by to say g’day. Sorry about the out of focus shot. He did not stay long.

Then did the walk up to the lookout in town. Nice views from there. Bicheno is a lovely coastal spot. We did a walk around the point and the wharves at the Gulch.

That night we went back into Bicheno to go on the night feeding of the Tasmanian Devils. We got picked up from town and were taken out to the Nature World Sanctuary and into the hide to view the devils. We were treated to a glass of wine and cheese whilst the guides set up a carcass for the devils to feed on. The curtain in the hide was drawn and there was a female devil feeding on the carcass already. Another female then joined in and then a male devil.

It was amazing watching the three devils going for it and interacting. The snarling and growling they were doing was amazing. The females are quite harsh with the males. The guides did not want any photos for the first 15 minutes but by the time they said we could take photos only the male was left. So the videos don’t catch any of the growling sounds etc. The fees were $65 per person and we were told a good portion of that goes toward fund raising for the work on conservation of the devil population. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

The next day was Saturday the 17th and it was a fine day. I had planned ahead, knowing this sunny one was coming. So I made a return to the Wineglass Bay Lookout and talked Linda into joining me this time. I was hoping to see the Bay in full sun and whilst it almost got there it still was not quite the best it could be.

We got a good photo of us both with Coles Bay in the background.

We met a lovely Christian family on the walk to the lookout who were full time on the road. The girl, who was the one who took our photo, gets contracts working as a nurse and they home school their little boy and girl. Had a good chat with them at the lookout.

We went back to camp for lunch. I knew we had some water in the back of the landcruiser that had leaked from a broken fresh water container since the night before. So I pulled everything out and found the felt carpet was sopping wet. So I had to pull all the carpet out of the back and lift the back seat carpet to get it all dry. Fortunately we had a sunny day. It was a big chore but had to be done. Not to worry. Got it done and packed everything back in. The beer I had afterwards went down very well.
