Chain of Lagoons & The Fingal Valley

Sunday the 18th March we hooked up and left the Pondering Frog. Headed north and filled up the water tanks at Bicheno at the Blowhole while Linda shopped. We only had another 30 kms to go to the Chain of Lagoons. It was a National Park free camp pretty much right on the beach.

It had been raining a lot overnight and in the morning so this campsite was not the best with the sandy dirty soil but we were not going to hang around there anyway. We headed out up Elephant Pass up to St Mary’s. Had a look around this nice little town. Went to the South Sister Lookout. It was an ordeal in that the signage that suggested visitors go to the lookout had no warning as to it being a serious four wheel driving only track. So not being prepared I had not let any air out of my tyres. I was concerned the whole way about getting a puncture but thankfully did not. Glad I got those BF Goodrich offroad tyres. Got there and the clouds rolled in and it poured down so no photos. Can’t win ‘em all.

We then drove through the beautiful Fingal Valley to Fingal. It was great sheep and beef cattle country. The flocks of sheep were enormous. Another nice little heritage town. Then onto Avoca and got these photos of some of the heritage listed buildings.

Had a coffee at the Cowshed Café and started our return trip. The size of the mountains in the distance are incredible. They were partly in cloud so photos were not worthwhile.

Then down St Mary’s Pass and back to camp. The campsite was in sunshine on our return and it looked a lot better than when we left.

We had some lousy weather that day but nice sunshine for these photos. What you can't see is the big winds we were having. The strongest of winds that I have experienced hit the van that night. I did not camp under any trees so we slept soundly apart from being woken occasionally by the wind.
