Port Arthur & Cape Hauy
On Monday the 26th Feb we left Swanwick Golf Club
and headed for Port Arthur. South of Swansea we came across the Spiky Bridge so
we pulled over and had a look. This bridge was built around 1845. It has all
these pieces of stone sticking up that has been concreted in. It is not know
why this was done. Possibly to give strength to the concrete bond on top but no
one knows.
We had a good trip down to the Port Arthur caravan park. We
arrived and set up. After a bite to eat we went and had a look at the
Remarkable Cave. As the name suggests it was remarkable. There are two openings
to the ocean and they join to one big cave which comes out to the viewing area.
The viewing area had been part of the cave and the overhead cavern caved in
forming a big open area. The cave, therefore, has this ‘Y’ shape. I walked
through the left side cave opening to the outside. When I came back through
after dodging the incoming water so as I could walk through dry I could hear
the water rushing around from the other side so I had to step lively to avoid
getting soaked boots. It really was amazing, or should I say remarkable.
The views from above the cave were beautiful. It was
interesting watching the surfers.
You can see the pinnacle type rocks of Cape Raul in the
distance.
After leaving the Remarkable Cave we went to the local golf
course as Maria’s (ie Maria and Darren, our mates from Hobart) dad had told us
of the great view from there. And so it was.
Earlier in the day I had phoned Darren about going on the
walk to Cape Hauy the next morning as he had mentioned he would do that with us
if he got the chance. Fortunately he was off work that week so Tuesday morning
Derek, Darren and I headed off to Fortescue Bay and started the walk to Cape
Hauy. The view back to Fortescue Bay.
This is a view to the Cape from part way. The track looks
like a flat walk from up here but when you get down there it was a steep climb.
Met another echidna on the way.
The views from the cape were just beautiful and spectacular. I
won’t apologise for so many photos.
The conquering hikers. We were pretty stuffed by the time we
got back to the car park. It took us about 3.5 hours.
Whilst the guys did the Cape Hauy walk Linda and Kay did the
Port Arthur Historic gaol. Linda and I have both been there before so I was not
interested in going this time and so there are no photos of it to post. Kay and
Derek had to have their camper back at the airport the next day so we did not
do much else for the day except rest our aching feet and legs. Linda and I will
get time to see more of Port Arthur later.
That night we had a fire at our campsite. Another great day.
