Waratah & Corinna
We now skip to Monday the 2nd of April as I had
reported in the Launceston post about us having spent the Saturday night and
Sunday with Maria and Josh at Launceston. So we left Launceston on the Monday
morning and drove to Waratah. We were enroute to Strahan to do the cruise on
the Gordon River but that was not till Friday so we planned to do some things
on the way which were on my list. Waratah is another mining town where tin was
discovered by James (Philosopher) Smith. This big tin mine saved the fledgling
Tazzie colony back in the day.
We did a walk around the town looking at the history. It is quite a pretty town and has a backdrop of Cradle Mountain which is framed nicely on one side of the town.
The history was interesting. The large amount of water and waterfall was utilized to operate a big water wheel that ran an ore crushing machine and also used for hydro electricity.
The history walk finished at the historical pub so it was
only right that we drop in, especially as there was a fire going.
On Tuesday morning we drove from Waratah to Savage River and
on to Corinna. Savage River is just a mine and nothing to see. Corinna has the
Pieman River and not much else. There is the Tarkine Hotel and café which seems
to run the camping and everything else. To be fair there are a few historical cottages and some information on the history.
There is a short walk to do which takes you to a huon pine.
The history of pining is interesting.
The river is nice. The ferry operator has a sense of humour. Not cheap though, $20 to go across with your vehicle.
